Episode: The First Prince’s “Banluptham Mayan” Ceremony

When Prince Siddhartha was 7 years old, his father ordered the officials to build a three-tiered pavilion (Saphok) inside the palace to be a royal throne.

This marked the beginning of the “Na Kwan Nak” ceremony, a royal tradition passed down through generations. The ceremony was held outside the palace near Kabinlapat. Prince Siddhartha was invited to lead the ceremony.

The ceremony proceeded smoothly. Prince Siddhartha asked his caretaker to watch the Na Kwan Nak procession as he wished, and chose to play alone. Sitting quietly under the shade of a tree, he experienced the first sign of a miraculous event called “Prathommayan.”

After the ceremony was completed, the caretaker hurried to the prince and saw the shadow of an old tree that did not lean toward the west. Amazed, he reported this to King Suddhodana. When the king arrived, he found the prince meditating peacefully under the tree’s shade and bowed to him a second time.

The three respects (wai) were:

  1. The first wai: during the Asitha Dapatha visit

  2. The second wai: while under the initial tree shade

  3. The third wai: after the prince renounced the world and ordained as a monk
