Episode: The Naming and Prophecy of Siddhartha

Five days after the birth of the Buddha, King Suddhodana held a grand ceremony and assembly, inviting 108 Brahmins to participate. From these, only 8 highly skilled Brahmins were chosen based on their expertise in the Vedas to perform a sacred ritual and give a name to the prince, as well as to predict his future characteristics.

The eight Brahmins were:

1. Rama Brahmin

2. Lakkhana Brahmin

3. Yanya Brahmin

4. Poccha Brahmin

5. Suttatta Brahmin

6. Sutucha Brahmin

7. Suyama Brahmin

8. Kondanya Brahmin (whose predictions are not guaranteed to be accurate)

The name given was Siddhartha, which can be interpreted in two ways:

• Firstly, “The one who has accomplished his goal” or “The successful one.”

• Secondly, “The perfect prince of the royal lineage who has the firstborn son as desired.”

During the prophecy, two groups emerged:
One group, the first seven Brahmins, agreed on one condition: if the prince ruled the kingdom, he would become a great universal monarch (Chakravartin).
However, if he chose to renounce the world and become an ascetic, he would attain enlightenment and become the supreme Buddha, the spiritual leader of the world.

The young Brahmin Kondanya was the only one who predicted that the prince would indeed renounce the world and become the Buddha.
