Episode: The Birth

According to ancient Indian tradition, when a woman was nearing childbirth, she must return to her hometown to give birth. Thus, Queen Māyā prepared to journey back to her birthplace, the city of Devadaha, to give birth.

She assembled a royal procession of carriages, elephants, horses, handmaidens, and soldiers to accompany her on the journey from Kapilavastu to Devadaha.

Along the way, they reached the beautiful and lush Lumbini Garden, located between Kapilavastu (her husband's city) and Devadaha (her own birthplace). The procession paused there to rest.

At that moment, Queen Māyā began to experience labor pains.
The atmosphere turned tense and filled with anticipation.

Soon after, the royal prince was born there, in Lumbini Garden, under a sal tree (some accounts say it was a Shorea tree).

A miraculous event occurred:
The newborn took seven steps, and lotus flowers bloomed beneath each step to support his feet.

He then raised one hand and proclaimed these words:

“I am the foremost in the world.
I am the noblest in the world.
This is my final birth.
There will be no more rebirth for me.”

The Buddha was born on the full moon day of the 6th lunar month, in the Year of the Dog, 80 years before the Buddhist Era (BE).
