🪷 Episode: The First Sermon to the Five Ascetics – Turning the Wheel of Dhamma
After attaining supreme enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, the Buddha, moved by great compassion, sought to help others free themselves from suffering. He journeyed to the Deer Park at Isipatana near Varanasi to teach His former companions—the Five Ascetics (pañcavaggiyā), who once practiced severe austerities with Him.
At first, they were reluctant to listen, but upon seeing the serene glow and peaceful composure of the Buddha, they felt compelled to hear His words.
The Buddha then delivered His first discourse:
"Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta" – The Setting in Motion of the Wheel of Dhamma.
In this sermon, He introduced the Middle Way (Majjhimā Paṭipadā) — the path that avoids both self-indulgence and self-mortification.
At the end of the sermon, Kondañña realized the truth and became the first enlightened disciple, marking the beginning of the Buddha’s dispensation. He taught the Four Noble Truths:
Dukkha – Suffering exists
Samudaya – There is a cause of suffering (craving)
Nirodha – There is a cessation of suffering
Magga – There is a path leading to the end of suffering
Dhamma Reflection:
"The Middle Way is the path of balance that leads to freedom from suffering."
"When one understands suffering, its cause, its cessation, and follows the path—liberation is found."
