“Rahula: The Young Seeker on the Path of Dhamma”
Rahula, the son of Prince Siddhattha and Princess Yasodhara, was the grandson of King Suddhodana. He was born on the same day that his father left to live as a renunciate, and thus never saw his father’s face.
After Prince Siddhattha became the Buddha, he ordained Rahula as a novice monk at the age of seven, making him the first novice in Buddhism. Rahula received thorough training in the Dhamma, and at the age of twenty he was fully ordained as a monk. After hearing the Cula Rahula Sutta, he attained arahantship.
Rahula was diligent and eager to study, and the Buddha praised him as “Ettakatha”—one who excels in learning. He passed away before the chief disciples and even before the Buddha, attaining final Nibbana in the Tusita Heaven.
“Early dedication to learning and practicing the Dhamma leads to wisdom and ultimate liberation.”
