The Mucalinda Naga Protecting the Buddha

During the sixth week after His Enlightenment, the Buddha moved from the shade of the Ajapala Nigrodha tree to another tree called the Mucalinda (the Muchalinda or Indian Oak tree), located to the south of the Bodhi tree. There, He sat in a state of deep meditation, experiencing the bliss of liberation.

The Miraculous Event: While the Buddha was meditating, a great unseasonal rainstorm broke out. The sky turned dark, and heavy rain, cold winds, and storms lashed the area for seven consecutive days. Mucalinda, the King of Nagas (serpents) who lived in a nearby pond, emerged and saw the Buddha exposed to the elements.

To protect the Buddha, the Naga King coiled his body seven times around the Buddha's body and spread his great hood over the Buddha’s head like an umbrella. This prevented the rain, wind, cold, and even insects from disturbing the Buddha's concentration. When the storm finally cleared after seven days, the Naga King uncoiled himself, transformed into a young man, and paid deep respect to the Buddha, marvelling at His serenity.
