The Ovada Patimokkha (The Heart of Buddhism)
On the full moon day of the third lunar month (Makha Bucha Day), nine months after His Enlightenment, a miraculous event called the Caturonghasannibat (The Fourfold Assembly) took place at Veluvana Monastery.
The Four Miraculous Events:
It was the full moon day of the 3rd lunar month.
1,250 monks assembled spontaneously without any prior appointment.
All of them were Ehi Bhikkhu, ordained personally by the Buddha.
All of them were Arahants (Enlightened ones) possessing higher spiritual powers.
The Essence of the Ovada Patimokkha: The Buddha delivered a sermon that serves as the "Heart of Buddhism" and a unified code of conduct for all monks to spread the Dhamma in the same direction. It is divided into three main parts:
The Fundamental Principles:
To avoid all evil (Sabba papassa akaranam).
To do good (Kusalassupasampada).
To purify one's mind (Sacittapariyodapanam).
The Buddhist Ideals: Patience and forbearance are the highest virtues; Nirvana is the supreme goal.
The Methodology for Monks: Not to insult, not to harm, to be restrained by the rules of the order, to be moderate in eating, to live in a secluded place, and to persist in higher mental training (meditation).
