The Victory Over Mara and Goddess Thorani

On the night before His Enlightenment, as the Bodhisattva (Siddhartha Gautama) sat beneath the Bodhi tree, Mara, the Lord of Illusion (Vasavatti), felt threatened by the prospect of someone escaping his realm of desire. Mara summoned a massive army of demons, monsters, and' terrifying beasts, wielding' deadly weapons to drive the Buddha-to-be away from his seat.

The Challenge of Mara: Mara claimed that the Golden Throne (Aparajita Pallanka) belonged to him. He pointed to his vast army and asked, "Who is your witness to the merits you have earned to sit upon this throne?" Being alone, with no human witness nearby, the Bodhisattva remained calm.

The Appearance of Phra Mae Thorani (The Earth Goddess): The Bodhisattva reached down with his right hand and touched the earth (the Mara Vijaya mudra), calling upon the Earth to bear witness to his lifetimes of virtue. Suddenly, Phra Mae Thorani, the Earth Goddess, rose from the ground. She declared that she had witnessed every act of merit the Bodhisattva had performed.

To prove this, she wrung her long, dark hair, releasing the water of libation that the Bodhisattva had poured onto the earth to consecrate his good deeds over countless lifetimes. The water flowed out in a massive, torrential flood, sweeping away Mara’s army and drowning the forces of evil. Defeated, Mara bowed in reverence and retreated. This cleared the way for the Bodhisattva to attain full Enlightenment at dawn, becoming the Buddha.
