The Buddha’s Oath and the Floating Bowl

ຫຼັງຈາກເຈົ້າຊາຍສິດຖັດທະ  (ພຣະພຸດທະເຈົ້າໃຈອະນາຄົດ) ຊົງບຳເພັນພຽນຢ່າງໜັກເປັນເວລາ 6 ປີ ໂດຍການທໍລະມານຕົນດ້ວຍວິທີການທໍລະມານຕົນດ້ວຍວິທີຕ່າງໆ ເພື່ອສະແຫວງຫາທາງພົ້ນທຸກ ແຕ່ກັບພົບວ່າວິທີນັ້ນບໍ່ແມ່ນຫົນທາງທີ່ນຳໄປສູ່ການຕັດສະຮູ້ ຊົງຕັດສິນໃຈເລິກບຳເພັນພຽນທຸກກະຣະກິຣິຍາ ແລະ ສະເຫວີຍເຂົ້າມະທຸປາຍາດ  (ເຂົ້າປະສົມເນີຍນົມ ) ຈາກນາງສຸຊາດາ ຍິງຊາວບ້ານຜູ້ສັດທາ 

ຫຼັງຈາກສະເຫວີຍເຂົ້າແລ້ວ ພຣະອົງໄດ້ສະເດັດໄປຍັງແຄມຝັ່ງແມ່ນ້ຳນຳເລັນຊະຣາ ແລະ ນຳຖາດທອງຄຳທີ່ໃສ່ເຂົ້ານັ້ນໄປລອຍນ້ຳ ແລະ ຕັ້ງຈິດອະທິຖານວ່າ :

“ຫາກເຮົາຈະໄດ້ຕຣັສຮູ້ເປັນພຣະພຣະພຸດທະເຈົ້າ ຂໍຖາດນີ້ຈົ່ງຈົ່ງລອຍທວນກະແສນ້ຳຂຶ້ນໄປເຖີ້ນ”

ເມື່ອອະທິຖານແລ້ວ ພຣະອົງປ່ອຍຖາດລົງແມ່ນ້ຳ ປາກົດວ່າຖາດທອງຄຳລອຍທວນກະແສນ້ຳຂຶ້ນໄປແທ້ ສະແດງເຖິງນິມິດອັນເປັນມຸງຄຸນ ວ່າພຣະອົງຈະໄດ້ຕຣັສຮູ້ເປັນພຣະສັມມາສັມພຸດທະເຈົ້າໃນອີກບໍ່ດົນ  

The Buddha’s Oath and the Floating Bowl

After practicing severe asceticism for six years in search of enlightenment, Prince Siddhartha (the future Buddha) realized that self-mortification was not the true path to liberation. He abandoned extreme austerities and accepted a meal of milk-rice (madhu-pāyāsa) offered by Sujata, a devout village girl.

After finishing the meal, Siddhartha went to the banks of the Neranjara River. He took the golden bowl used to hold the rice and, making a solemn vow, he said:

“If I am truly to attain Enlightenment and become a Buddha, may this bowl float upstream against the current.”

Then he gently placed the bowl in the water. Miraculously, the bowl floated upstream, defying the natural flow of the river. This auspicious sign indicated that his enlightenment was near and that he was destined to become the fully awakened Buddha.
